Say hello to my little friend. Actually, he's my big golden friend and I'm sure you've met. His name is Oscar and he's pretty well known in the motion picture business. Last night I was inducted into the prestigious Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences. A local organization of some note. They put on a fancy shindig once a year where they hand out smaller versions of the fellow I'm standing next to.
I've known a fair number of individuals who were members of this organization. I've even attended motion picture screenings and a few fancy parties because my colleagues got me in the door. Oddly enough, I never considered becoming a member because I always viewed the Motion Picture Academy as a club for Hollywood big shots and I was definitely not in that class.
Well, it would appear I'm now a member of the Motion Picture Academy. Last evening I was inducted into the unique organization that I remember dreaming about as a kid growing up in my home town of Santa Barbara. Although it was only 90 miles away, Hollywood remained in my Imagination a magical place reserved for the royalty of the movie business. Like most kids I grew up watching the Oscars and dreaming the dreams of a young movie maker. In time these dreams would ultimately be realized at Walt Disney's magic factory where I would be invited to join an organization of gifted story tellers.
Honestly, I never imagined myself as a member of Walt's story team, and I never gave any thought to becoming an Academy member. Yet, as you follow a path through life you never really know where its going to lead. I confess I've had a number of delightful surprises in my long career and this I'm happy to say, is another one.
